National Grid

Who are we?

National Grid is the largest utility in the UK and second largest in the US. In the UK, we own and operate the high pressure gas transmission system in Britain, along with owning Britain’s largest gas distribution business, delivering gas to 11 million consumers. We also own the high-voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales and operate the electricity transmission system across Great Britain.

In the US, our business includes providing natural gas to approximately 3.4 million customers and distributing electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers.

We therefore play a vital role in delivering gas and electricity to many millions of people across Great Britain and the northeast US, in an efficient, reliable and safe manner. We have enough gas pipes and electricity wires to travel around the world’s equator over 65 times!

We believe National Grid is a special place to work and our employees are actively engaged in the journey that we are making - because they welcome the challenge and feel their contribution is valued. We are an inclusive and diverse company that values team working. Collaboration and sharing best practice are fundamental to the National Grid way.

Working at National Grid allows many opportunities for development, and full training is given for all roles. Many Pertemps staff have progressed to become National Grid employees; this is something we actively encourage.

We have 27,000 employees and when we all take action, this has powerful results, especially in the areas of Safety, Customers, Communities and the Environment. Therefore, above all, we look to our people to make things happen.
