Blinkered bosses in Coventry deny time for staff training

Access to valuable, free vocational training is being turned down because many employers are blinkered to the benefits of allowing staff time away from their desks to attend courses, says David Moreland, managing director of Nuneaton firm, Three As Training.

The finding is despite growing recognition that vocational training and staff development have a significant and positive effect on the workplace, improving staff motivation and performance, as well as increasing staff retention.

Mooreland said he has noted the trend over the past few years, after expected growth in demand for free training failed to materialise.

He commented: "Modern technologies mean that the world today is operating at a faster pace than ever before, with staff being expected to take on board and adapt to changing work procedures on a regular basis. Training eases the adaptation process, supporting individuals as they develop and learn new skills. It also ensures that businesses benefit from an employee who is more effective and efficient."

Three As Training is a subsidiary of the national recruitment consultancy, Pertemps Group Ltd, and provides training to companies and individuals in Coventry, Warwickshire, Birmingham, Hampshire and Thames Valley. It has provided free NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) assessment and certification to all under 24s since the early 90s.

Moreland continues: "Many bosses are blinkered to the positive benefits of allowing their staff time to receive training and tend to focus on the short term gain of keeping them 'tied' to their normal duties. Companies we have worked with (such as? check) have seen a significant impact on productivity and morale in the workplace.

"It only takes on average half a days training for about a year to complete an NVQ, which is not much when you consider the positive outcomes. As more bosses become aware of this, I'm sure we will see a shift in attitude towards training and staff development."

Three As Training offer courses in over 40 subjects, from Accounting and Administration to Housekeeping and Retail. The courses are offered to company employees and members of the public.
