Employment law has increased burden on local businesses

The views were voiced at a recent business seminar organised by recruitment services provider Pertemps in Newcastle, with an employment law expert from Weightmans Solicitors.  

Over 100 people from the local business community attended the event representing a cross section of companies.  


According to a straw poll taken among nearly 100 delegates who attended the event, 81 per cent thought employment law had got more complex to manage, and nearly 70 per cent believed their workloads and red tape had increased due to the laws.


Kath Dellow, regional operations manager at Pertemps, hosted the event at St James’ Park.  She said:  “There comes a high degree of responsibility when recruiting staff, and employment compliance brings an increased amount of paperwork. This straw poll suggests businesses are having to shoulder more responsibility when it comes to employment law.”


The straw poll also found that just over 70 per cent of delegates had sought the advice of employment law specialists in the last year; 57 per cent felt at risk from the employment laws in the UK, and nearly 40 per cent had been subjected to an employment tribunal claim in the last two years.


Jane Cox, specialist employment lawyer at Weightmans LLP, said:  “These findings suggest that employment law has never been higher on the agenda for business in the region.  Legal obligations to staff can be complex and overwhelming for those faced with their implementation, but with comprehensive legal support they needn’t be.


“I encourage businesses not to wait until the last minute – get your policies and structure in place to avoid costly tribunal claims further down the line.”
