Pertemps has donated £25k to Black Country legend ‘Blind Dave’ Heeley for his fundraising exploits in 2019 and 2020.
He will be taking part in lots of fundraising activities over the next two years, including a 55-mile ultramarathon in South Africa.
The mega marathon fanatic, who was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa and completely lost his eyesight in his 20s, has achieved a lot since his first marathon in 2002, including running seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.
“Since then I’ve been thrown into the ridiculous realm of creating world records and fundraising!” Dave said.
“The Comrades Marathon in South Africa in June will be the race of my life. It’s extremely popular and really hard to get a place in the race. There are around 20,000 people who take part from all over the world.”
The Comrades Marathon is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon race. Athletes have 12 hours to complete the course and there are a number of cut-off points along the routes which runners must reach by a certain time or be forced to retire from the race. Only people who have completed an officially recognised marathon (42.2km) in under five hours can qualify to run.
Of course, Dave isn’t resting from now until the Comrades Marathon. He’s taking part in the Manchester marathon in April, followed by a 200-mile cycle back home.
He is then taking part in the Velo Birmingham & Midlands 100-mile bike ride in May, which promises to be bigger and better than ever before. It takes 17,000 riders on a picturesque journey through Birmingham and Coventry as well as Solihull, Warwickshire, Dudley and Sandwell.
Tim Watts said: “Dave is an inspiration to everyone; he’s been through so much, yet he doesn’t let anything dampen his sprit. His determination is admirable – there needs to be more people like Dave Heeley! I tell my grandchildren about him and his escapades and they can’t believe some of the challenges he takes on.”
Pertemps has continued to support ‘Blind Dave’ over the years and are proud to sponsor him once again in 2019.
Good luck Dave!
