Didn't get the job you wanted? Here's what to do next

Posted 1 year ago •

Have you reached the point where, after months of gruelling effort, you still haven't landed the job you were hoping for? Here are our top 5 tips to support you with the knockbacks of the job search.

Don’t take it personally

It can be disheartening when you get rejected, especially when you’ve put a lot of time and effort into an application process. You may need some time to let this frustration out and that’s okay – scream, cry, curl up in a ball, do what you need to do! Unfortunately, this situation may happen more than once in your job search. It’s important you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and see this as a learning experience.

Say thank you and stay connected

It’s important to stay connected with a company, even if you feel a little miffed by the rejection. Send a thank you to the interviewer and stay connected via LinkedIn. It’s a good opportunity to tell them you are open to any future opportunities they may have. Your openness can make you stick in their mind.

Ask for feedback

In your thank you note you should ask the interviewer for feedback. There’s nothing worse than mulling over what you maybe did wrong in your head. Some constructive feedback will help you in your next process. When working with Recruiters, they tend to get more direct feedback from employers. Avoid being defensive when you receive this and always see this as a way to improve. Not every job is the right fit and that’s okay.

Why that job?

Was it the salary, company culture, progression opportunities or a specific benefit? Knowing this will help you build a criteria for your future search. Other positions will come up that suit your needs and having this will help you spot them straight away and be one of the first applicants they see.
