Recently, there has been a significant shift in societal attitudes towards mental health, and men are increasingly recognising the importance of taking care of their emotional well-being.

Seventy-four per cent of men are balancing their physical and mental health, according to a recent survey conducted by Pertemps.

Traditionally, discussions surrounding mental health have often been stigmatised and associated with weakness. However, it now seems more men are now willing to confront their mental health challenges head-on and actively seek balance between their mental and physical well-being.

Historically, men have been conditioned to conform to rigid gender roles that emphasise strength, resilience, and emotional stoicism. Many men may have felt pressured to suppress their emotions and deny their struggles, leading to many suffering in silence. But society’s evolving understanding of mental health and the advocacy efforts of people and businesses, have paved the way for a more inclusive and compassionate approach.

There are an increasing number of high-profile figures who have openly shared their personal struggles, such as Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Zayn Malik. The influence of these individuals has helped to dismantle stereotypes and foster a more empathetic culture surrounding men’s mental health, encouraging others to acknowledge their own challenges and seek support.

Regular exercise, adequate sleep and a nutritious diet are acknowledged as essential components of overall well-being. Engaging in physical activities not only benefits physical fitness but also serves as a powerful outlet for stress and anxiety. In addition, men are embracing activities such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practices to cultivate emotional resilience and find inner peace.

The evolving understanding of masculinity has played a significant role in men's increased emphasis on mental health. Rather than adhering to outdated norms that prioritise emotional detachment, men are embracing a healthier concept of masculinity that encourages vulnerability, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Men are creating space for self-care, self-expression, and the pursuit of a fulfilling and balanced life. As more individuals and communities continue to advocate for mental health awareness and acceptance, we can create a world where men no longer suffer in silence but thrive in their pursuit of well-being.

At Pertemps, we are working together towards diminishing the taboo surrounding mental health, providing free, confidential help available 24/7 through our partner Health Assured.
