Job Description
Role: Product Testing Operative
Location: Kettering
Salary: £26,000
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
About the Department
The Safety Product Testing team conducts testing on a wide range of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for a global customer base, ensuring products meet minimum safety and performance standards. PPE testing includes gloves, fall protection equipment, motorcycle garments, high visibility clothing, eyewear, helmets, hearing protection, chainsaw garments, kneepads, sports protection, and more.
The department consists of multiple accredited laboratories equipped with specialist machinery used to assess the physical properties of PPE against international and European standards. Test results are reported to customers and used to support product development and
certification processes (e.g. CE/UKCA marking). The team includes a mix of technicians, technologists, and support staff responsible for
coordinating and conducting testing activities.
About the Role
As a Technician within the Safety Product Testing team, responsibilities include:
• Carrying out routine physical testing of PPE in line with international and European
standards, both on-site and occasionally at customer facilities
• Operating test equipment and machinery to generate accurate results
• Recording test data on documentation and electronic systems for reporting purposes
• Preparing test samples prior to testing
• Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of laboratory environments
• Managing sample storage and traceability
• Supporting senior technical staff during customer visits and demonstrations
Training will be provided for all aspects of the role where required.
About You
Essential:
• GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science
• Good computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, email, collaboration tools)
• Ability to remain motivated during repetitive tasks
• Reliable with strong time management skills
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• High attention to detail and thorough approach
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn
Desirable:
• Experience working in a laboratory environment
• Familiarity with PPE
• Experience using standard office software
• Understanding of quality management systems
• Adaptable with a willingness to develop new skills
