Lead a department of English Teachers and provide guidance and support to help raise attainment levels.

We are seeking an inspirational and dynamic Head of English to lead this ‘Good’ English Department in Selly Oak. As the Head of English, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of English education within the school. You will lead a large and dedicated team of English educators, including three Early Career Teachers (ECTs), ensuring that the department delivers outstanding teaching and learning experiences for all students.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the English Department, promoting a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Lead, motivate, and support a team of passionate English teachers, fostering a collaborative and inclusive working environment.
  • Develop and implement a stimulating and comprehensive English curriculum, aligned with the National Curriculum and the school's ethos.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning within the department, implementing strategies for improvement where necessary.
  • Oversee the assessment and tracking of student progress in English, using data to inform intervention strategies and support student achievement.
  • Forge positive relationships with students, parents, and external stakeholders, advocating for the importance of English education.
  • Stay abreast of developments in English education, incorporating best practices and new methodologies into departmental planning and delivery.
 
Requirements:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and relevant academic qualifications in English or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a successful English educator, with a track record of raising student attainment.
  • Previous leadership experience within an English department or similar role.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • A passion for English education and a commitment to promoting literacy and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong analytical abilities, with the capacity to use data to drive improvement.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a wider leadership team.
