What does a Behaviour Support Worker do?
Behaviour support assistants assist special education teachers in their classroom duties. They tend to the physical needs of students with a variety of disabilities and help out with tasks such as bathroom breaks, bus rides, eating and classroom switches. They also provide instructional support to students, teachers and parents and prepare lesson programmes.
Tasks required include:
- Supports schoolwork under teacher’s supervision.
- Helps child understand instruction through a variety of means and encourages self-confidence and independence.
- Identifies signs of distress and offers reassurance.
- Implements care programmes, as appropriate.
- Helps and encourages child to communicate.
- Attends to child’s physical needs.
- Provides feedback to teachers and completes and maintains records.
What are the entry requirements for a Behaviour Support Worker?
Academic qualifications may be required by some employers, although entry is possible with relevant experience alone. A DBS check is mandatory.
