Salary: Up to £63,000 per annum (DOE)
Location: Clevedon (Hybrid working available)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer – Sustaining to provide strategic technical leadership across the sustaining engineering function. This role supports both Product Company operations and Service divisions, ensuring robust engineering governance, consistent standards, and high-quality technical delivery across the full product lifecycle.
You will play a key role in ensuring safe, compliant, and serviceable electrical design solutions across factory support, obsolescence management, and field upgrade programmes, protecting in-service performance and customer value.


Key Responsibilities:


Technical Leadership & Governance
 
  • Provide strategic technical leadership across sustaining engineering activities
    • Chair and assure design reviews, ensuring robust engineering decision-making
    • Define and maintain electrical engineering approaches across sustaining programmes
    • Ensure consistent application of engineering standards, governance, and best practice

Engineering Delivery & Problem Solving
 
  • Lead investigation of complex field issues and drive corrective engineering actions
    • Apply structured problem-solving techniques (e.g. 8D, Kepner-Tregoe, Six Sigma)
    • Own technical aspects of system/subsystem design including risk identification and mitigation
    • Ensure engineering change is correctly controlled through configuration management processes

Design Assurance & Validation
 
  • Accountable for safety and type testing of systems/subsystems
    • Define and oversee verification and validation activities (test and analysis)
    • Review and approve technical reports ensuring compliance to requirements, standards, and directives
    • Apply risk assessment methods including FMEA

Cross-Functional Influence
 
  • Work collaboratively across engineering, manufacturing, service, and programme teams
    • Influence technical decisions without direct authority across multiple stakeholders
    • Ensure clarity of work packages, deliverables, and engineering expectations

Capability Development
 
  • Mentor and coach electrical engineers across all levels
    • Support development of future Lead Engineers
    • Promote adoption of best practice and emerging engineering technologies


Skills & Experience Required:
 
  • Degree in Engineering or related discipline (essential)
    • Significant experience in sustaining engineering / product lifecycle support (essential)
    • Strong background in engineering change, configuration control, and technical documentation
    • Experience in structured problem solving and root cause analysis (8D, Six Sigma, etc.)
    • Strong analytical skills with ability to drive root cause and corrective action
    • Ability to influence across multidisciplinary teams without direct authority
    • Experience in verification, validation, and risk-based engineering decision making
    • Strong communication skills with ability to simplify complex technical issues
    • Deep technical expertise in electrical engineering with broader systems understanding
