The Company

An established sustainability and building services design consultancy based in the Southampton area, is looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team.

They provide mechanical building services engineering, energy management and sustainability consultancy services across a wide range of projects. Working with end users, construction professionals and installing contractors, the consultancy delivers design and technical solutions for new-build developments, refurbishment projects, plant replacement schemes and energy efficiency initiatives.

With a strong focus on energy efficiency, system optimisation and effective building operation, the business supports clients in reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions and operating costs.

The consultancy's services include building services design, energy audits, net zero carbon strategies, carbon reporting, utility management and technical investigations.

The Role

This role is suitable for a Mechanical Design Engineer looking to develop their career within a supportive and technically focused environment. You will work on a range of projects across different market sectors, supporting both client-side assignments and design and build contracts for contractors.

You will be involved in projects from initial concept and feasibility stages through to detailed design and the production of technical documentation. The role offers exposure to a broad range of mechanical building services systems, with opportunities to develop your technical knowledge and project experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with and undertake mechanical building services design across a range of projects.
• Support site surveys, investigations and technical assessments.
• Design and develop low-temperature hot water heating systems.
• Work on domestic hot and cold water services.
• Contribute to mechanical and natural ventilation design.
• Support the design of refrigerant and chilled water cooling systems.
• Contribute to low and zero-carbon technology design solutions.
• Undertake above-ground drainage design.
• Produce technical design drawings using AutoCAD.
• Assist with design specifications, performance specifications, equipment schedules and technical submissions.
• Complete design calculations using relevant industry software packages.
• Support feasibility studies, condition surveys and technical investigations.
• Contribute to project delivery and work collaboratively with the wider design team.

Candidate Requirements

• Experience or a relevant background in mechanical building services engineering.
• An understanding of mechanical building services design principles.
• Competency in AutoCAD (essential).
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a wider design team.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
• Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
• A willingness to develop technical knowledge and take on new responsibilities.
• A full UK driving licence (essential).
