School Libarian – Gateshead

About the Role
We are working with a school in the Gateshead area that are seeking an enthusiastic, organised, and student-focused School Librarian to manage and develop our school library. The successful candidate will create a welcoming learning environment that encourages reading, research, literacy, and independent learning while supporting students and staff across the school.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about books, information management, and helping young people develop a lifelong love of reading.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the school library.
    • Maintain and organise library resources, including books, digital materials, and periodicals.
    • Develop and promote reading initiatives, literacy programmes, and library events.
    • Support students in locating, selecting, and using library resources effectively.
    • Assist students and staff with research projects and information literacy skills.
    • Manage library borrowing systems, including issuing, returning, and tracking resources.
    • Select, order, and catalogue new library materials within the allocated budget.
    • Monitor stock levels and conduct regular audits of library resources.
    • Create attractive displays to promote reading and learning.
    • Support curriculum delivery by sourcing relevant resources for teaching staff.
    • Supervise students using the library and maintain a positive learning environment.
    • Promote responsible use of technology and online information resources.
    • Maintain accurate library records and prepare reports as required.
    • Organise author visits, book fairs, reading challenges, and other enrichment activities.
    • Ensure the library remains a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for all users.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Good IT skills and confidence using library management systems.
    • Passion for reading, literacy, and supporting young people.
    • Ability to engage positively with students, staff, and parents.
Desirable Requirements
  • Library qualification or relevant experience in a library, school, or educational setting.
    • Experience managing library resources and budgets.
    • Knowledge of children's and young adult literature.
    • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities in schools.
