Job Description
GCSE Tutor (Maths or English)
Network Learning Pathways is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic GCSE Maths Or GCSE English Tutor to support young people working towards their GCSE qualifications.
Weston Super Mare, North Somerset (Commutable from: Clevedon, Worle, Pill, Bristol, Winscombe, Burnham-on-Sea, Portishead, Shirehampton).
The Role
This is not a typical GCSE teaching role.
Whilst subject knowledge is important, this role is first and foremost about building positive, trusted relationships with young people who have often experienced significant barriers to learning. Many of our learners have struggled in mainstream educational settings and may have experienced trauma, disrupted education, poor attendance, anxiety, low confidence, and/or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
The successful tutor will understand that progress begins with trust. The ability to motivate, encourage, and connect with learners is just as important as the ability to teach Maths/English. You will help learners overcome barriers, build resilience and self-belief, and develop the confidence and stamina needed to work towards their GCSE qualifications.
Our learners benefit from smaller class sizes, regular breaks, personalised support, and a flexible approach that meets them where they are. We are looking for someone who is patient, adaptable, trauma-informed, and committed to helping young people achieve success on their own terms.
We use an established GCSE online learning and examination provider, giving learners access to a structured course, learning resources, assessments, and examination entry. Tutors will not be expected to design a GCSE curriculum from scratch. Instead, the role is to facilitate and enhance learning through the existing programme, providing subject expertise, guidance, encouragement, and tailored support to help learners progress successfully towards their qualifications.
Delivery Model
Delivery will be a mixture of 1:1 face-to-face tuition, 1:1 online tuition, and small group sessions (typically 4–6 learners).
Small group sessions are designed to provide a supportive and engaging learning environment while maintaining the individualised approach that our learners require.
Tutors will be supported by a Learning Mentor during small group sessions, enabling learners to access additional encouragement, pastoral support, and help with engagement where needed.
The successful tutor will be comfortable adapting their approach to meet the needs of individual learners and small groups, balancing academic progress with relationship-building and learner wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
About You
- £35 per hour, plus holiday pay accrued for every hour worked.
- Approximately 10 hours per week during school term times.
- This is a term-time-only position, with no expectation to work during school holidays.
