The Power Of An Inclusive Workforce

Posted 3 years ago •

Research shows that inclusive teams perform up to 30% better in high-diversity environments, according to Gartner.

Inclusion in the workplace will continue to be an ever-present and vital component. Employees who feel included feel a sense of belonging that drives increased positive performance and inspires innovation through collaboration.

Inclusive workplaces have the ability to deliver better individual, business and organisational outcomes. It is one of the most important keys to retention.

However, Stonewall’s LGBT in Britain – Work Report (2018) found that:

More than a third of LGBT staff have hidden that they are LGBT at work for fear of discrimination

One in ten black, Asian and minority ethnic LGBT employers have been physically attacked by customers or colleagues in the last year

Nearly two in five bi people aren’t “out” to anyone at work.

The best employers recognise the value in taking proactive steps to create inclusive workplace environments. But too often, LGBTQ+ employees still face barriers in relation to bullying, lack of senior support for LGBTQ+ equality and inadequate policies.

Employees who take proactive steps to establish inclusive work policies, showcasing best practice and their visible commitment to LGBTQ+ equality policies, will boost work morale and create an environment that people are proud to be a part of.

People professionals have a key role in ensuring management practices and policies are fit for purpose. Here are some LGBTQ+ inclusion strategies you can consider to encourage a more inclusive workforce:

Provide LGBTQ+ training

Set up an LGBTQ+ network

Appoint LGBTQ+ allies

Use gender neutral language

Celebrate LGBTQ+ history and events.

There are still many challenges confronting the LGBTQ+ community. Businesses need to promote authenticity, encourage robust employee communities and foster open dialogues on important issues to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ people.

We acknowledge, respect and support the LGBTQ+ community because, at Pertemps, we strive for inclusivity.
