JOB DESCRIPTION

A Refuse and Salvage Site Operative is responsible for supporting waste management and recycling efforts at a specific site. This role involves various tasks, including waste collection, sorting, salvaging, and ensuring the proper disposal of materials in compliance with environmental regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

No academic qualifications are required. Training is provided on-the-job. A minimum age limit of 18 years normally applies.

TASKS

  • Assist in the collection of refuse from designated areas within the site..
  • Load collected waste onto refuse collection vehicles..
  • Sort collected waste into recyclables and non-recyclables..
  • Separate materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal for recycling..
  • Identify salvageable items from the refuse that can be recycled or reused..
  • Set aside salvageable materials for further processing..
  • Use equipment such as forklifts, conveyor belts, and compactors to facilitate the sorting and processing of materials..
  • Operate machinery safely and efficiently..
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning..
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to supervisors..
  • Adhere to waste management and recycling regulations and guidelines..
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and environmental standards..
  • Maintain accurate records of the quantity and types of materials collected and processed..
  • Complete required paperwork for tracking purposes..
  • Work collaboratively with other site operatives, drivers, and supervisors..
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure efficient waste collection and processing..
  • Clean work areas regularly to maintain a safe and organized environment..
  • Assist in the general maintenance and cleanliness of the waste management facility..
