Using social media in your job search

Most of us can’t remember a life without social media. Over the years it has changed the shape of the recruitment industry and how employers look for their ideal candidates.

You can take advantage of this to boost your job search and to give employers the best impression of you.

LinkedIn

This is the biggie! LinkedIn is known as the business networking platform and allows you to create a profile showcasing all your previous experience and skills.

Most people on LinkedIn have got this to a tee now – the new big thing is personal branding.

Personal branding is about promoting yourself and your ideas as if you were a brand. It’s about creating a strong and positive image of who you are and what you do. Having a compelling personal brand will increase your visibility within your industry and give you a bigger chance of being noticed by potential employers.

Make sure your personal brand is authentic and consistent. Posting regularly is key to the growth of your page. Develop a routine of posting and interacting with others to make yourself more visible.

Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok

You might not associate these platforms with finding a job but that doesn’t mean you can’t engage with company pages.

Follow companies you aspire to work for and keep up to date with their latest goings on, events and achievements. This could come in handy if you get the chance to interview with them.

They also give you an insight into their company culture and if you think you would be a good fit.

These platforms also have direct messaging features, there’s no harm in dropping them a DM. This could be a way of finding out if they have any open vacancies that suit you or just opening a conversation and putting yourself on the radar for the future.

Your own social media

Always be cautious of how you represent yourself on social media if you are engaging with potential employers. Avoid posting anything inappropriate or offensive. Employers want to see you are good fit for their company and that you will represent them well.

With so much competition out there, reaching out on social media could be what gives you the edge and could get you noticed by an employer!
