We’ve taken a dive into the careers of some of client Hasting Direct’s #HastingsHires for advice to others on their careers. Here we talk to Sharmon Pearson, a Customer Representative. 

Tell us about your background and what led you to join Hastings Direct

I joined Hastings Direct as a part-time Customer Representative back in January 2018 after being referred by a friend from school. I was working alongside my studies at college.

Once I had finished college, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go to university or pursue my career within Hastings Direct. I decided to go with the latter and I am so glad that I did! I switched to a full-time role in October 2019 and haven’t looked back!

What does a typical day in Customer Service at Hastings Direct entail for you?

During my time as a Customer Representative, I was on the phone providing help and guidance to our customers. In Customer Service, we offer support to our customers throughout their time with us, from the point they take their policy out, right up until they reach their renewal.

I was working from home from April 2020 until August 2020. It was a strange time for everyone but the support from my team and team leader was everything I needed to get through it. We made lots of changes to the ways that we were working in order to help our customers, colleagues and the community.

Throughout COVID, I was given the opportunity to participate in other activities within the business to develop my career, such as recruitment, coaching and training. These opportunities gave me the confidence and skills I needed to progress and I’ve since been successfully accepted for a secondment position as a Team Leader.

What advice would you give to someone looking to develop their career at Hastings?

Go for it! There are endless opportunities in various departments and roles to develop your career at Hastings and you will always have a mountain of support available for whatever you decide to do.

What do you love most about working for Hastings Direct?

I love my colleagues the most – there’s such a diverse collection of people and each and every one of us works together to ensure we can support our customers as much as we possibly can. When transitioning from part-time to full-time, I was super nervous about joining a new team, but everyone was so welcoming and I have built amazing friendships with people in the business that I hope will continue to flourish.
