JOB DESCRIPTION

An Electrician is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems. Electricians work in various settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial environments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Academic qualifications may not be required, though some GCSEs/S grades or an equivalent qualification may be an advantage. Relevant NVQs/SVQs are available at Levels 1, 2 and 3. Apprenticeships combining practical work experience and technical training are available at Levels 2 and 3. Entrants must have good eyesight and normal colour vision.

TASKS

  • Install wiring, lighting, outlets, switches, and electrical panels in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings..
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical issues, identifying and repairing faults in wiring, circuits, and electrical devices..
  • Perform repairs on faulty electrical components, including switches, outlets, circuit breakers, and other devices..
  • Install electrical systems in new construction projects, ensuring compliance with building codes and safety standards..
  • Upgrade and modify existing electrical systems to meet changing requirements or improve efficiency..
  • Work on power distribution systems, including installing and maintaining electrical panels, transformers, and distribution boards..
  • Install, repair, and maintain lighting fixtures, bulbs, ballasts, and other components..
  • Implement safety measures and adhere to safety regulations to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment..
  • Conduct electrical inspections to identify potential hazards, code violations, and areas requiring improvement..
  • Interpret and work from electrical blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to guide installations and repairs..
  • Address issues related to power quality, such as voltage fluctuations and harmonic distortion..
  • Use testing equipment to measure and verify electrical parameters, ensuring the proper functioning of systems..
  • Respond to emergencies, such as power outages or electrical failures, and perform prompt repairs to restore electrical service..
  • Collaborate with other construction professionals, including architects, engineers, and other trades, to coordinate electrical installations..
  • Ensure that all electrical work complies with local, state, and national electrical codes and regulations..
  • Communicate with clients to understand their electrical needs, provide estimates, and explain the scope of work..
