JOB DESCRIPTION

An HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) Mechanic, also known as a Truck Mechanic or HGV Technician, is a skilled professional responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic entry requirements, although some employers may require GCSEs/S grades or an equivalent qualification. Training is undertaken Off and on-the-job. Apprenticeships at NVQ/SVQ Levels 2 and 3 are available and take three to four years to complete.

TASKS

  • Conduct thorough inspections of HGVs to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues..
  • Perform maintenance tasks and repairs on HGV engines, addressing issues with fuel systems, turbochargers, and exhaust systems..
  • Service and repair transmissions, differentials, and drivetrain components to ensure optimal performance and reliability..

  • Repair and maintain air conditioning and heating systems in HGVs to ensure driver comfort..
  • Inspect, repair, and replace components of the exhaust system, ensuring compliance with emissions standards specific to HGVs..
  • Perform wheel alignment and balancing on HGVs to ensure proper tire wear and handling..
  • Service and repair the fuel system, including fuel injectors, fuel pumps, and fuel filters following manufacturer specifications..
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment and tools specific to HGVs to identify and address electronic and computer-related issues..
  • Use welding and fabrication skills to repair or modify HGV components and structures..
  • Perform routine lubrication tasks and fluid changes according to maintenance schedules..
  • Communicate with fleet managers or vehicle owners to understand concerns, provide repair explanations, and offer cost estimates..
