JOB DESCRIPTION

An MOT Tester, short for Ministry of Transport Tester, is a qualified professional responsible for conducting vehicle inspections to ensure that they meet the safety and environmental standards set by the government. In the United Kingdom, the MOT test is a mandatory annual assessment for vehicles that are over three years old.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic entry requirements, although some employers may require GCSEs/S grades or an equivalent qualification. Training is undertaken Off and on-the-job. Apprenticeships at NVQ/SVQ Levels 2 and 3 are available and take three to four years to complete.

TASKS

  • Inspect the fuel system, including the fuel tank, fuel lines, and emissions control devices, to ensure proper functioning..
  • Assess the structural integrity of the vehicle, including the chassis and body, to identify any issues that may affect safety..
  • Identify and document any defects or issues found during the inspection, categorizing them according to severity and providing recommendations for repair..
  • Maintain accurate records of each inspection, recording test results, defects found, and any repairs or adjustments made..
  • Communicate with vehicle owners regarding the test results, explaining any defects found and advising on necessary repairs or maintenance..
