JOB DESCRIPTION

A plumber is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in the installation, maintenance, and repair of systems related to water supply, drainage, and sanitation.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic requirements although GCSEs/S grades are advantageous. NVQs/SVQs in Engineering Maintenance and in Plumbing and Domestic Heating are available at Levels 2 and 3. Apprenticeships are available for plumbing at Level 2 and 3.

TASKS

  • Install piping systems for water supply, drainage, and sewage in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings..
  • Install and connect fixtures such as sinks, faucets, toilets, showers, bathtubs, and water heaters..
  • Diagnose and repair leaks, burst pipes, and other plumbing issues to ensure the proper functioning of water systems..
  • Clear and unclog blocked drains and sewage systems using various tools and equipment..
  • Conduct inspections of plumbing systems to identify potential issues and ensure compliance with building codes..
  • Install and repair gas lines for appliances like stoves, water heaters, and heating systems (in cases where plumbers are trained for gas work)..
  • Install, repair, and maintain water heaters, including tankless and traditional models..
  • Respond to emergency calls for plumbing issues, such as burst pipes or major leaks, providing immediate repairs..
  • Install and maintain backflow prevention devices to ensure the safety of the water supply..
  • Upgrade or replace outdated plumbing systems to meet modern standards and improve efficiency..
  • Work collaboratively with other construction professionals, such as electricians and HVAC technicians, during building projects..
  • Connect appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators to water supply and drainage systems..
  • Test water quality and provide solutions for water treatment or filtration if necessary..
  • Educate customers on proper plumbing maintenance practices and provide advice on water conservation..
  • Maintain records of installations, repairs, and inspections for future reference..
