JOB DESCRIPTION

A Vehicle Technician, also known as an Auto Technician or Automotive Technician, is a skilled professional responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles. These technicians work in various settings, including automotive repair shops, dealerships, and fleet maintenance facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic entry requirements, although some employers may require GCSEs/S grades or an equivalent qualification. Training is undertaken Off and on-the-job. Apprenticeships at NVQ/SVQ Levels 2 and 3 are available and take three to four years to complete.

TASKS

  • Inspect, repair, and replace components of the exhaust system, ensuring compliance with emissions standards..
  • Conduct tire inspections, repairs, and replacements, including wheel balancing and alignment..
  • Service and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in vehicles..
  • Test and replace vehicle batteries, ensuring proper voltage and electrical supply..
  • Perform routine fluid changes, including oil changes, coolant flushes, and brake fluid replacements..
  • Communicate with vehicle owners to understand concerns, provide repair explanations, and offer cost estimates..
  • Maintain detailed records of vehicle inspections, repairs, and parts used for documentation and customer records..
  • Conduct road tests to evaluate the performance of vehicles after repairs and adjustments..
  • Recommend and perform preventive maintenance tasks to extend the lifespan of vehicles and prevent future issues..
