CNC Setter Operator
Location: Water Orton
Salary: Approximately £33,576 during training, rising to approximately £35,535 following successful completion of training, including shift allowances
Hours: 38 hours per week
Shift Pattern: Weekly rotating mornings and afternoons
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Set Precision Components — Don’t Just Load Machines
Are you an experienced CNC Setter Operator looking for a stable, permanent position with structured pay progression, modern machinery and an early finish every Friday?
This is a primarily CNC Milling Setter Operator role, with some CNC turning also involved. Strong milling experience is essential, while previous turning experience would be advantageous but is not essential, as training can be provided.
A critical part of this role is the ability to confidently read and interpret technical engineering drawings, understand dimensions and tolerances, and manufacture precision components to the required specification.
You will set and operate CNC machinery, select the correct tooling and fixtures, make machine adjustments and inspect your own work to ensure components meet the required quality and dimensional standards.

Reporting to the Manufacturing Supervisor, you will primarily set and operate CNC milling machinery, with some turning operations, to manufacture precision components from engineering drawings and specifications.

Machinery & Controls
The training rate is £14.94 per hour, increasing to £15.81 per hour following successful completion of training.
You will rotate weekly between the following shifts:
Morning Shift – 7.5% Shift Allowance
Monday to Thursday: 6:00am – 2:00pm
Friday: 6:00am – 12:00pm
Afternoon Shift – 20% Shift Allowance
Monday to Thursday: 2:00pm – 10:00pm
Friday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm
Based on the weekly shift rotation, total annual earnings are approximately:

The Role
Reporting to the Manufacturing Supervisor, you will primarily set and operate CNC milling machinery, with some turning operations, to manufacture precision components from engineering drawings and specifications.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Setting and operating CNC milling machinery
- Producing precision components to engineering drawings, specifications and defined tolerances
- Reading and accurately interpreting technical engineering drawings
- Selecting and installing appropriate tooling, jigs, fixtures and cutting tools
- Completing tool changes and adjusting machine offsets
- Carrying out first-off and in-process inspections
- Using verniers, micrometers, gauges and other precision measuring equipment
- Setting and operating CNC turning machinery where required
- Monitoring machine performance and supporting improvements to cycle times
- Identifying and reporting machine, tooling or production issues
- Completing production records and maintaining product traceability
- Supporting less-experienced colleagues when required
- Maintaining a clean and organised working environment in line with 5S principles
- Following all company quality, Health & Safety and manufacturing procedure
What We’re Looking For
To be considered for this position, you should have:
- At least 2 years’ experience setting and operating CNC machinery
- Strong, hands-on experience setting and operating CNC milling machinery
- The ability to confidently read and interpret technical engineering drawings
- A good understanding of dimensions, tolerances and engineering specifications
- Experience carrying out tooling changes and offset adjustments
- Some experience making basic CNC programme edits
- Experience inspecting precision-engineered components
- The ability to use verniers, micrometers, gauges and other measuring equipment accurately
- Good attention to detail and a strong quality-focused approach
- Basic computer literacy
- A proactive approach to identifying and resolving production issues
Experience with CNC turning would be advantageous but is not essential.
- The successful candidate will primarily work on CNC milling machinery, but the ability and willingness to undertake some turning work as required would be beneficial.
- A Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent engineering qualification would be advantageous; however, relevant practical CNC experience is more important.
Machinery & Controls
- You will have the opportunity to work with a range of CNC machinery, including DMG, Mori Seiki and Hardinge machines with Fanuc controls.
