Position Title: Senior Operative
-Location: Northampton
-Reports to: Team Leader / Shift Managers
-Work Pattern: Night Shift

Purpose of Position

-First line manager for the DC Teams
-Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the department they are leading, including all people aspects
-Providing a ‘hands on’ approach to ensure the operation achieves its goals
-To identify and action team development needs in the required competencies to meet the logistics performance indicators and productivity levels, and ensure the continued success of the DC.
-Occasionally required to supervise other areas of the operation or to deputise for the Team Leader
-To provide a consistent level of employee relations across the DC
-Identifying, developing and pursuing business development opportunities.
-Liaise with and maintain good communications with all departments to ensure effective operation of the site

Responsibilities and accountabilities

People Management:

-Confidently manage first level Employee Relations, allowing the Team Leaders / Shift / Inventory & Systems Manager to take a hands off management approach.
-Pro-actively manages the teams sickness and lateness levels to appropriate KPI levels, including the completion of all required paperwork to the required company standard. Should take corrective measures where required.
-Monitor individual performance and KPI targets, ensuring these meet company requirements
-Instigate corrective action if targets are not being met and where necessary, instigate formal performance management proceedings in conjunction with HR.
-Ensure effective communication is maintained at all levels, including daily team briefings
-Assist the Team Leaders / Shift / Inventory & Systems Manager and with any investigations that need to be undertaken and ensure that complete and accurate information is gathered
-Ensure that all paperwork relating to employees is stored within their HR file, including file notes and meeting notes
-Pro-active day to day management and monitoring of staff performance against KPI’s.
-Ensuring effective adjustments are made to working practices to achieve targets if required
-Liaise with Administration Manager to ensure all employees are fully trained to carry out their tasks
-Proactively encourage team members and employees to work efficiently and effectively.
-Manage poor performing employees
-Ensure effective communication is maintained at all levels, including daily team briefings
-Assist with any investigations that need to be undertaken and ensure that complete and accurate information is gathered


-Responsible for achieving maximum cost effective productivity through effective planning & deployment of resource (staff & equipment) within the area of responsibility.
-Ensure daily requirements of the logistics function are achieved.
-Manage workload to satisfy customer orders and other operational requirements, through effective planning whilst giving consideration to other areas of the business.
-Ensure that all customer orders are processed to meet delivery requirements & report any potential shortfalls.
-Employ most cost-effective method of operation considering headcount and workload planning against overtime hours.
-Liaise with other departments to ensure the logistics function is working efficiently
-Reports possible procedural improvements to the Operations Manager
-Work closely with Team Leader / Shift / Inventory systems Manager to ensure they are aware of any high level operational or people issues as soon as they occur
-Work with the opposite Senior Operatives / shift team leader on a daily basis to ensure a complete and smooth shift changeover occurs
-Manage and lead the shift, striving to maximise productivity, quality and efficiency across the Warehouse


-Monitor staff handling of all the company products and take corrective action to prevent loss or damage.
-Liaise with Inventory Control and ensure procedures are followed to maintain stock accuracy/integrity.
-Ensure agreed KPI’s are achieved including ISO activities.

Health and safety:

-Keep up to date with HSE audits and follow up actions to improve the safety of the working environment
-Understand the requirement for a safe operation and ensure safe methods of work are employed and required audits completed.
-Promote a positive H&S awareness amongst all of the staff on shift.
-To assist in the development of Risk Assessments & Safe Systems of Work where and when required.
-Conduct daily security checks on all employees and visitors, and as a result, initiate the disciplinary procedure where necessary
-To ensure a safe and legal environment you will take responsibility for site compliance to HSQE standards and ensure that these are continuously improved.
-Implementation of ISO standards
-Ensuring the Warehouse is maintained to 100% 5S levels at all times
-Completing random Audits on Check books for Vehicles and any MHE equipment

-PC literate – to intermediate level.
-Working knowledge of multi shipment type of customers
-Experience of working in a fast pace DC environment
-Understanding of Health and Safety practices within the DC
-Working knowledge of DM+, SAP systems
