Principal Design Engineer (Mechanical) An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a
national building services consultancy. This is a permanent, full-time role operating within an agile and flexible working framework, based from a UK office with hybrid working available.
About the role You will join a collaborative team of mechanical, electrical and low-carbon engineers delivering high-quality, sustainable building services design. As a national consultancy with a strong UK footprint, the business works across a broad range of sectors including healthcare, education, residential, commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, public sector and net-zero carbon projects.
The role offers significant autonomy, technical responsibility and client exposure, with clear progression opportunities for the right individual.
Key responsibilities- Acting as Project Lead on selected mechanical building services projects
- Working as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team on larger schemes
- Attending client, design team and principal meetings, including presentations
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring to junior mechanical engineers
- Raising and promoting technical excellence within the mechanical discipline
- Developing into a key point of contact for strategic clients
- Supporting repeat business through strong client relationships
- Delivering technically challenging projects across multiple sectors
- Client-facing involvement across all project stages from concept to completion
- Producing and reviewing drawings, specifications and technical reports
- Producing calculations or overseeing their completion by others
- Collaborating closely with colleagues to achieve project and business goals
Experience and qualifications- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
- Chartered or working towards chartership preferred
- HNC / HND candidates with strong design experience also considered
- Minimum 3 to 4 years post-qualification experience in building services design
- Proficiency in relevant design software, including:
- Microsoft Office
- Relux or Dialux
- Amtech
- Revit
- Strong knowledge of British and European Standards and Building Regulations
- Knowledge of HTMs beneficial
- Professional membership or working towards membership of CIBSE or IET
- Understanding of HVAC systems and associated plant
- Experience integrating embedded generation and renewable technologies
- Working knowledge of BREEAM and sustainable design principles
- General understanding of electrical engineering to contribute effectively at meetings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proactive mindset with a genuine desire to learn and develop
