We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior GIS Developer to join our dynamic data team at Thames Water. As a Senior GIS Developer, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and maintaining robust GIS applications and solutions, enabling enhanced spatial data utilisation across the organisation.
This role requires proficiency in GIS development, advanced SQL and Python capabilities for data modelling, processing, and integration tasks. You will collaborate closely with the GIS Solutions Lead, GIS Architects, and various stakeholders to deliver high-quality applications while mentoring junior team members and ensuring best practices are followed.
What you’ll do as a Senior GIS DeveloperGIS Development & Application Design:- Design, develop, and maintain cutting-edge GIS applications using Esri ArcGIS and other GIS platforms.
- Implement advanced spatial data processing workflows and automation scripts, leveraging Python expertise to streamline and enhance efficiency.
- Develop both web-based and desktop GIS applications to support diverse business operations across Thames Water.
- Ensure GIS solutions meet industry standards and best practices for spatial data management.
Data Integration & Modelling:- Develop and manage comprehensive data models to support enterprise GIS solutions, ensuring seamless integration with existing data systems.
- Work extensively with SQL to manage and manipulate spatial and non-spatial datasets, optimising database performance for efficient data retrieval.
- Collaborate with data engineers to integrate GIS applications with broader enterprise data systems, supporting Thames Water’s data-driven goals.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:- Partner with business analysts, GIS architects, and key stakeholders to gather, document, and refine detailed application requirements.
- Support the GIS Solutions Lead in delivering the GIS technology roadmap and identifying opportunities for innovation.
Quality Assurance & Performance:- Conduct rigorous code reviews, testing, and debugging to ensure the delivery of reliable, scalable, and high-performance GIS solutions.
- Optimise GIS applications for performance, scalability, and reliability in alignment with organisational priorities.
- Ensure all GIS applications adhere to established security and compliance standards.
Mentoring & Leadership:- Provide expert technical guidance and mentorship to junior GIS developers, fostering growth and development within the team.
- Promote a culture of excellence by advocating for best practices in GIS development and spatial data management.
- Lead and contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives, driving continuous improvement across the team.
Base location – Hybrid – Clearwater Court, Reading.Working pattern – 36 hours, Monday to Friday.What you should bring to the role:- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, Geography, or a related field.
- Experience in GIS application development, with a proven track record using Esri ArcGIS technologies.
- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, with demonstrable experience in developing data models and processing workflows.
- Strong knowledge of spatial databases, geospatial data structures, and their integration with GIS applications.
- Familiarity with cloud-based GIS solutions (AWS, Azure) is a plus.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
