Job Description

SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant

Do you want a salaried route into education with clear impact each day?

Ready to support pupils with autism so school feels calm, predictable and successful?

*** SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** Permanent – April 2026 start date
*** £23,000 - £25,000 starting salary
*** School based in the Ward of Selly Oak
*** Support young minds with Autism and similar SEN requirements

The Role:
You will join the inclusion team and provide steady, practical support so pupils with autism access learning from arrival to home time. Each morning you will check equipment, review the timetable and agree a simple personal goal. In lessons you will reduce task load with visual schedules, first–then steps and short checklists. You will model a clean first example, prompt with clear language and use quiet cues to maintain focus. You will plan short regulation breaks, supervise a calm restart and help pupils complete and submit work. You will run brief sessions that build communication, social understanding and functional literacy and numeracy, then help pupils use those gains back in class. You will keep concise notes, update ABC or progress records when needed and confirm next steps with the class teacher, SENCO and therapists involved. Safeguarding and behaviour procedures are followed throughout.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You are patient, consistent and practical. You notice small wins, keep routines tight and fade prompts as independence grows.

  • Degree at 2:2 or above in any subject. Psychology preferred.
    • Clear written notes and confident spoken communication.
    • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
    • Genuine interest in autism, pupil wellbeing and positive behaviour support.
    • Experience supporting children or young people is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This Selly Oak school has stable routines and a joined-up approach to SEN. Staff use shared visuals, task cards and regulation plans so support is consistent between lessons. There are quiet spaces for short breaks, close links with SALT and OT, and simple plan–do–review cycles that keep next actions clear. Reading has protected daily time with matched texts. Maths is taught in small, connected steps with frequent low-stakes checks. New colleagues receive a thorough induction, weekly bite-size CPD and coaching with practical, usable targets. Admin support covers timetables, consent and record keeping so you can focus on pupils.
