Job Opportunity: General Labourer/Assistant Gardener

Network Recruitment Wales is seeking a General Labourer/Assistant Gardener to join the Grounds Maintenance team in Merthyr Tydfil, for a 3-week temporary contract to cover short-term sickness. Role: General Labourer/Assistant Gardener
Location: Merthyr Tydfil
Contract Duration: 18/08/2025 – 09/09/2025
Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday–Friday, 07:00–15:00)
Rate: PAYE: £13.26 per hour | Umbrella: £16.84 per hour
Employment Type: Temporary
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform a range of horticultural tasks with minimal supervision, including grass cutting (using pedestrian/ride-on mowers), strimming, hedge cutting, and leaf blowing.
- Carry out general grounds maintenance, such as litter picking, bin emptying, weeding, soil cultivation, mulching, watering, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation, and planting.
- Mark out football fields and repair fine turf and playing surfaces.
- Assist the arboriculture team as needed.
- Drive vehicles and pull trailers (with appropriate qualifications).
- Maintain and clean tools, equipment, vans, and tool sheds, reporting defects to ensure safety and functionality.
- Support the construction of landscape schemes and seasonal bedding (removal and planting).
- Use natural methods for plant protection and pest control, avoiding chemicals/pesticides where possible.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation to maintain a safe environment for staff and park users.
- Work flexibly across Neighbourhood Services departments (e.g., Waste, Highways, Street Cleansing, or Cemeteries) as required.
- Contribute to achieving Green Flag Parks accreditation and maintaining high standards for the borough’s green spaces.
Requirements:
- Essential:
- Qualified to a minimum of Level 2 City & Guilds (or equivalent) in horticulture or a related field.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Experience in grounds maintenance or gardening, with proficiency in using hand tools (e.g., strimmers, hedge cutters, blowers).
- Ability to work independently with initiative and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Strong awareness of health and safety practices to ensure a safe working environment.
- Physically capable of tasks such as digging, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
- Willingness to work across Neighbourhood Services departments as needed.
- Desirable:
- Valid driving licence for driving vehicles/trailers.
- Experience in a local authority or similar grounds maintenance role.
- Knowledge of natural plant protection and pest control methods.
