A CHP (Combined Heat and Power) Technician is a specialized professional who operates, maintains, and troubleshoots combined heat and power systems. CHP systems, also known as cogeneration systems, generate electricity and useful thermal energy simultaneously from a single energy source.

Tasks required include:

• Operate and monitor CHP systems to ensure efficient and reliable electricity and thermal energy production..
• Perform routine maintenance tasks on CHP equipment, including engines, generators, heat recovery systems, and control systems..
• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with CHP equipment to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance..
• Conduct repairs or coordinate repairs with specialized technicians or contractors to address any malfunctions or component failures..
• Implement measures to optimize the efficiency of CHP systems, considering factors such as load demand, fuel utilization, and overall performance..
• Oversee fuel handling, storage, and supply systems to ensure a reliable and continuous fuel source for the CHP system..
• Monitor and manage emissions from CHP systems to comply with environmental regulations and standards..

What are the entry requirements for a CHP Technician?

There are no formal academic requirements although GCSEs/S grades are advantageous. NVQs/SVQs in Engineering Maintenance and in Plumbing and Domestic Heating are available at Levels 2 and 3. Apprenticeships are available for plumbing at Level 2 and 3.
