Finding it hard to build new habits?

The New Year is a great time to think about more than just goals. It’s also the perfect opportunity to focus on the habits that help turn those goals into reality. Whether you’re looking to progress in your current role, learn new skills, or take the next step in your job search, the right habits can make a real difference.

We recently ran a LinkedIn poll to see how New Year’s resolutions were holding up and the results were pretty telling. Out of 233 people, 74 said they’re still going strong, 7 admitted they’d already given up and 152 hadn’t set a resolution at all. It’s a reminder that while some of us stick to our goals, many either skip them entirely or find them harder to keep than expected.

It’s a timely reminder that motivation alone isn’t always enough. This is where habits come in. Rather than relying on big, short-lived resolutions, focusing on small, consistent actions can make progress feel far more achievable and sustainable.

Here’s how to build habits that actually stick, and how a little consistency can go a long way in shaping a stronger, more successful career.

Why habits matter in your career

Habits are the small, everyday actions that quietly build up over time. They help you:

  • Stay organised and motivated
  • Grow your confidence and skills
  • Stand out to employers and hiring managers
  • Reduce stress and keep momentum in your job search.

Think of them as the building blocks of long-term success. Little steps done consistently make big goals feel more achievable and far less overwhelming.

How to build habits that last

Getting started does not have to be complicated. Try these four practical tips:

  1. Start Small
Big goals are exciting, but trying to do too much at once can be overwhelming. Instead, start with a small, manageable action. For example, spend 10 to 15 minutes a day learning a new skill. Those minutes add up faster than you think.
  2. Be Consistent
It is not about being perfect, it is about showing up regularly. Doing something small most days is far more powerful than doing a lot occasionally. Over time, these little actions create real momentum.
  3. Tie Habits to Your Routine
Make it easy by linking new habits to things you already do. For example, if you check job alerts with your morning coffee, use that time to send one networking message or update your LinkedIn profile.
  4. Track and Celebrate Progress
Keep a simple checklist or journal to see how far you have come. Celebrate the small wins too, like connecting with someone new or finishing a learning module. Every little achievement helps reinforce the habit.

Habits only really work when you repeat them. Over time, even small, simple actions can create noticeable results in your skills, confidence and career opportunities.

This year, shift the focus from quick resolutions to everyday routines that stick. These small, consistent steps can help you grow your confidence, improve your skills and get noticed by the right employers.
