JOB DESCRIPTION

A Healthcare Assistant (HCA) is a vital member of the healthcare team, providing essential support to qualified healthcare professionals in delivering patient care. HCAs work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and community care, contributing to the overall well-being and comfort of patients.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic entry requirements. In most cases workers will be required to register with the appropriate statutory body which involves satisfying the registration criteria. This would normally include holding or working towards the appropriate qualification for the job. Entrants must typically be 18 years old and have experience of working in a care environment. Both Off and on-the-job training is available. A wide range of qualifications including NVQs/SVQs covering various aspects of care are available. Background checks including a DBS check are likely to be required.

TASKS

  • Assist patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and toileting..
  • Support patients with mobility, helping them move around and maintaining their comfort..
  • Take and record vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate..
  • Report any abnormal observations to the nursing or medical team..
  • Assist healthcare professionals with medical procedures, examinations, and treatments..
  • Ensure that patients are prepared for procedures and provide post-procedure care as required..
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting observations, care provided, and any changes in the patient's condition..
  • Follow strict hygiene and infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infections..
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients..
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to patients, engaging in conversations and activities to enhance their well-being..
  • Assist patients with their meals, ensuring they receive the appropriate dietary requirements..
  • Monitor and encourage adequate fluid intake..
  • Support patients in performing prescribed exercises to maintain or improve mobility..
  • Use mobility aids safely and assist with transfers as needed..
  • Effectively communicate with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals..
  • Report any concerns or changes in the patient's condition to the appropriate staff..
  • Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and stay updated on best practices in healthcare..
